Learning To Appreciate Things Exactly As They Are

Jul 29, 2019

Something came to me this morning as I was journaling.

It has to do with focusing on what is right in front of me rather than looking for what is missing.

I pictured this elaborate meal laid out in front of me on this beautifully decorated table, and me sitting there thinking about a dish or some food that isn’t part of the spread. Like maybe we’re having lobster and all I can think of is there isn’t any steak on the table.

The message I took from it is when someone prepares a beautiful meal for you, you enjoy it for what it is you don’t focus on the one dish that isn’t being served. That would be preposterous – you’ll have steak another time – but for now it needs to be all about enjoying the lobster.  Enjoying the moment as it is, instead of wishing it was different somehow.

You will never experience joy if you are always wishing for something different from your present experience.

My present experience does not include a romantic relationship. It includes so many other amazing things, experiences, and people…

The secret to me experiencing joy and feeling satisfied and fulfilled, is to fully appreciate what is in front of me now without looking for what’s missing.

Nothing is missing – everything is exactly as it should be in this moment.

For some reason this feels profound.

I think I need to write that again.

Nothing is missing – everything is exactly as it should be in this moment.

This has occurred to me before, but without that particular visual of the meal, it didn’t land the same way for me.  Picturing this beautifully laid feast outdoors at sunset with candles and mini lights strung above a long table with wine and lots of chatter and laughter… It’s so spectacular. You couldn’t possibly be thinking about anything other than what is in that exact moment.  And you wouldn’t want to!

That’s how my life feels right now.

It’s like a beautiful feast.

It’s so full of blessings: my clients, my circle of close friends, me enjoying alone time, travelling and enjoying travelling alone, plans for creating an online coaching business, spending time with the kids (when I see them for five minutes) LOL.

My cup truly is running over – it’s absurd for me to be thinking about the one thing that isn’t on the table right in front of me. Any energy or time spent thinking about what isn’t part of my life right now is completely wasted and only takes away from it.

The theme for this week will be appreciating what IS without thinking or focusing on what isn’t here yet…I will catch myself anytime I find myself wishing things were different from how they are in the moment.

I will choose to find appreciation for exactly how things ARE. xo
